Two very different Thailands, and a fortnight rarely has room for both at depth. How we choose between the jungle north and the turquoise south.
Two countries in one
Thailand's north and its islands feel like different nations. The north (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, the hills) is jungle temples, elephants, cool mornings, hill-tribe crafts and slow culture. The south is limestone karsts, turquoise water, beach villas and the rhythm of the sea.
Most trips can do both, but rarely both deeply in a single fortnight without rushing. So the honest question is which one is the heart of your trip.
Choose the north if…
You travel to discover: markets and temples, a cooking class, time with elephants done ethically, a Muay Thai session, the misted hills. The north rewards curiosity and a slower pace, and it is gentle on the budget.
It is at its loveliest in the cool, clear season from November to February.

Choose the islands if…
Rest and water are the point: a private villa above a quiet bay, island-hopping by longtail, diving and snorkelling, dinners with your feet near the sand. The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phang Nga) and the Gulf islands (Koh Samui) keep slightly different seasons, so the right island depends on your dates.

Or do both, in the right order
Our most common answer is a week of each, north first and islands second: discovery while you are fresh, then stillness to finish. A few nights in Bangkok bridge them, and an internal flight keeps the travel painless.

Frequently asked
Is the north or the islands better in Thailand?
Neither: they suit different travellers. The north is for culture, jungle and slow discovery; the islands are for beaches, water and rest. Many trips do a week of each.
Can I visit both in one trip?
Yes, usually a week of each, north first then islands, with Bangkok and a short internal flight between them. Doing both deeply in under two weeks means rushing.
When is the best time to visit?
The north is best November to February. The Andaman islands are best November to April; the Gulf islands keep a slightly different calendar, so the right island depends on your dates.
Which is better value?
The north is generally gentler on the budget, while island villa stays sit higher. We balance the two within a single trip.
