Thailand runs on three seasons and two coasts, which is why a single answer never tells the truth. Here is how we time it for the north, the islands, and everything between.
The short answer
For most of Thailand, the best time to visit is the cool, dry season from November to March sunny days, low humidity, and the calmest seas on the famous Andaman coast. It is the textbook window, and the busiest.
But Thailand is long and its two coastlines keep opposite calendars, so the honest answer depends on where you are going. Time a journey well and you can find good weather somewhere in the country almost any month of the year.
Month by month
November to February is the headline season: cool, dry and bright across most of the country, ideal for Bangkok, the north and the Andaman islands. March and April turn hot genuinely so inland building to the wonderful chaos of Songkran, the Thai new year water festival, in mid-April.
May to October is the green season, when the monsoon brings warm afternoon rain, lush landscapes and far fewer visitors. The rain is often a short, heavy affair you plan around rather than against, and the rates and crowds reward the flexible traveller.
Two coasts, two calendars
This is the detail that catches people out. The Andaman coast in the west Phuket, Krabi, Phang Nga, the Similans is at its best from roughly November to April, with calm, clear water for diving and island-hopping.
The Gulf coast in the east, including Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, runs slightly differently: it stays drier later into the year and sees its heaviest rain around October to December. So if you are set on a particular island, the island decides the month and we will point you to the right side of the country for your dates.

The north
Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and the jungle north are loveliest in the cool season, November to February, when the air is clear and the hills are green from the recent rains. Avoid the burning season roughly late February into April when agricultural haze can settle over the region and dull the views.
If a Muay Thai camp, an elephant sanctuary or the misted temples of the north are the heart of your trip, plan for that cool, clear winter window.
Festivals worth planning around
Two are worth building a trip around. Songkran, in mid-April, turns the whole country into a joyful water fight extraordinary to witness, though transport and prices climb. Loy Krathong and Yi Peng, around November, fill the rivers and the northern skies with floating lanterns and lights, and are quietly one of the most beautiful things you can see anywhere.
Both are remarkable; both also fill the best hotels early, so we either build around them deliberately or steer just clear.

Our pick
For a first trip that takes in Bangkok, the north and the Andaman islands, aim for December to February the most reliable weather, at its loveliest. For value, light and emptier beaches, the green season can be a quiet delight if you keep the days flexible.
As always, the best time to visit Thailand is whenever we can match the weather to the version of the country you most want to see and on a coastline this varied, that timing is half the craft.
